monday musings//The D is silent.

It’s Oscar season again folks. I won’t bore you with the obvious style makers in the Best Costume Design category. We get it…old clothes are pretty fucking impressive, but I will highlight some of the more unusual fashion muses in this year’s little gold man nominees. First up, Django.

posterWho wouldn’t want to look like this guy? His costume is pure badass. The western influences are subtle and cool, timeless almost. Not a cowboy shirt or boot in sight. Who knew antebellum style could be relavent today?

green.I strangely wanted to emulate his style. I’m a big proponent of functional fashion. Why not make your clothes do double duty? Pockets and space for a sleeve mounted pistol? Yes, please.

Club Monaco/knit sweater, $199
Dorothy Perkins/olive jacket, $79
Weekend Max Mara/corduroy pants, $120
Frye/low heel boots, $298
By Malene Birger/leather glove, $77
Topshop/scarf, $32
crossfox on Etsy/leather belt pouch, $110
Outback Trading Co./hat, $34

Just remember, leave the velvet blue suit to Austin Power.

monday musings// Gypsy cowboy.

Yes, that sounds ridiculous, but just indulge me.

If you haven’t seen the new Sherlock Holmes, you should.  The more and more I think about it, the more and more obsessed I am about it.  And the more and more I want to watch House.  Thank god for cable TV.

That aside, I couldn’t help but notice how kick-ass Noomi Rapace looked.  I’ve always been a sucker for cheekbones and a girl who doesn’t take shit from anyone.  And she looks good even when she’s getting the shit kicked out of her.  She’s really the coolest chick in the movies right now.

Sherlock Holmes has updated period clothing by injecting a certain mood rather than maintaining continuity (a more wearable Tim Burton if you will).  It’s not stuffy or too pretty.  I’m sure the bartenders at Maison Premiere know what I mean.  They’re drooling over Watson’s three piece suit, wishing they could grow such a manly moustache.

But that’s a whole other post for another day.

Back to Miss Simza.Yes, she reads tarot cards and has a ring on every finger…and they may or may not be adorned with coins.  And there’s a whole lot of velvet and tapestry involved in her first scene including a carpet bag.  A real live carpet bag.

But what’s wrong with that?  I love some good jingly jewelry.  I’m the the biggest sucker for lace.  You just have to balance it with a bit of toughness and spunk rather go hippie-layers crazy.

Insert  cowboy influences.Very American, no?  Hat, military jacket, and that wonderfully tooled wide leather belt.  Look at the mismatched buttons!  I’m in love with this skirt from Free People so we’ll take it from there.

All Saints fitted leather jacket, $336
Long skirt, $100
Frye lace up boots, $268
Forever21 feather jewelry, $11
House of Harlow 1960 coin earrings, $160
Pamela Love antique sterling silver ring, £240
ASOS chain necklace, $18
Felt hat, $50
Linea Pelle Collection chain belt, $198

Thinking of making this a new winter look.  But then, there’s always this.  Ugh.
